HELLO!!
To start.... THANK YOU.
Everyone has been wonderfully supportive through this. The fundraiser campaign has already been more than we could have hoped for and we believe we'll be OK with what has been donated so far. We haven't quite hit the target, but that's OK. In fact, we would feel really bad about accepting TOO MUCH, so this is quite honestly... perfect.
The only thing that could really ruin us at this point would be the need for surgery and it really doesn't look like that's going to be a factor. Thank goodness. With the tests taken so far, here's what we have learned:
- Mirabelle has malformed vertebrae all the way up her spine (but that it likely doesn't have anything to do with her recent illness and may never be a factor in her life. We just have to keep that in mind and watch that area closely - forever. It was a relief when the x-trays did not show any signs of something truly life-threatening, but also a heart-breaker when we found out she has this issue which can be serious trouble for many bulldogs.
- She has both yeast and bacterial skin infections (which we are now shampooing for daily) This is a possible bigger problem if it turns out she ALSO has an actual allergy to one or both. That could explain how extreme her skin reactions have been. We will learn more about this next week when the allergy tests come back.
- The ULTRASOUND identified a questionably large lymph node (but we aren't sure yet what it is doing to her or how serious it is)
- She definitely has some form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease ( and we are waiting for the final allergy test to come back before tackling this) This COULD explain her vomiting and could be pretty simple to get on top of if everything else looks good.
- Her blood work came back with no serious concerns, just a couple of issues that may be explained by the infections and inflammation.
- And her ultrasound also came back without anything scary. That's GREAT because serious diseases have all but been eliminated, as has a herniated oesophagus and the condition known as megaesophagus, but it's also frustrating because there's no clear cause for her coughing and vomiting. We may just be looking at a very unfortunate combination of things that came together in a "perfect storm" to create this significant, but not life-threatening combination of symptoms.
The last test to come back will be the allergy test. It will likely be back by Tuesday and at that point all the doctors will lay out a full plan on what to do next. Surgery looks very unlikely, so again, we don't want to accept too much money. We wouldn't feel good about that.
BUT... if that were necessary for any reason, what's left after all of these tests wouldn't come close to covering thousands of dollars of surgical bills, so would have to re-evaluate at that point. If it was Mirabelle's only hope, we could relaunch a fresh fundraiser, tell the new story and hopefully get some new momentum going as well. But - and this is very important to make clear - because of all of your support, we are OK right now. And don't forget that the YouCaring page has been collecting in US funds which go much further for us up here in Canada. The 3500 US dollars translate into 4500 Canadian, so we consider this fundraiser a massive success.
And the only reason we didn't reach the original goal in our opinion is because these days Facebook is working hard to limit exposure to anything unless you pay for it. So we are gratefully going to shut it down after tomorrow, let the final donations float into the bank account and then see where we are at. We're confident we're going to be just fine and that with this all of your help, we are going to sort out Little Miss Saucypants.
Much love and our greatest thanks to everyone who participated in Mirabelle's fundraiser!!
